Day 130
8-05-2006
I had a photo-session to try to capture some of my original chopstick wrapper origami designs. Here some of the images.
All the models were folded on plain or graph paper cut to the size of chopstick wrappers — though I have successfully folded them all ‘in the wild’ in sushi restaurants.
I captured the images using an old Canon G2. The lighting and the camera lens’ depth of field made it difficult to get the images in focus especially if I placed the image at an angle to the camera (such as the tortoise where the body is in focus but the head is out of focus.)
I used a blue cloth draped over a box. My idea was to try to enhance the ability to extract the image in photoshop. However, the cloth was a little too shiny and created a fringe pattern in many of the other images that I captured.
I’ll post some more designs when I get some better images.
Very nice! Would you be able to post some instructions of how to make these, or at least some pictures of the intermediate steps?
Hi Trose
Yes, I’m going to document a couple of them online. The rest will be in the book. Just a case of finding the time! I’ve got majorly distracted by main job in the last couple of months.
Any particular one you would most like documented?
Neil
I’m not sure why I hadn’t read the archives, although having now read it, I’m very interested in your book. A book on chopstick wrapper oragami is a great idea (I’ve had a very hard time finding anything about chopstick wrapper oragami). Keep me posted
How’s the project coming along? Is this blog dead? I’m still interested!
Hi Trose
Thanks for the query. Yes, it’s still alive – just!
A major project in my day job came through in July and I’ve essentially devoted my life to that for the past 8 months. It’s starting to wind down now.
I have progressed a little. I’ve improved the quality of my photography a lot and hope to post some more pix soon.
I’ve now got a complete set of sushigami, so the next step for me is to get the software ready for creating the diagrams. I’ve been improving my illustrator skills. I’ll post a couple of diags here on the site when I get them done. ETA won’t be till April at the current rate.
Hey, just letting you know that I haven’t forgotten about this website! I’ve got you bookmarked and I still check at least once a week in hopes of an update!
Hi there, just came across this blog in my search for chopstick wrapper origami…wondering where things got to with this neat idea…nearly a year has passed since the last entry. are you still there? And how’s the project progressed??
